In early 2002, I was living in southeastern France and was quite active in the world of bicycle race officiating. I was (and still am) quite interested in the differences between how European cycling federations manage cycling and how USA Cycling does so.

I documented what I found in France in a small paper entitled The Hexagonal Chainring, which describes the structure of cycling in France in the following areas:

  • Organization of the French federation
  • Licenses and categorization
  • Race events and scheduling
  • Clubs and their role in cycling
  • Education and cycling
  • Training and management of race officials and timers
  • Discipline
  • Promotion of cycling
